"D2 Classic and Expansion - Horadric Cube Formula question"

Brief question on a Horadric Cube Formula that converts three rings into a new random amulet, or three amulets into a new random ring. The Blizzard page says a random ring or amulet dependant on character level will be created. The question is: Is this formula restricted to only creating magic rings, or can rare/set/unique rings and amulets also be formulated in this way? I haven't found much in my own testing of this thought, so I bring it before all of you to find out.

I do not know the case for expansion.
But for classic D2, the ring created will only be magical.
