Crystal Missile
Diablo II News
Written by Bolty
Monday, 06 October 2003
On the bug front, Crystalion has discovered a problem with the way "missiles" are handled while studying various Assassin skills. Skills that utilize a "missile" attack - such as Nova, Teeth, Twister, Shock Web, War Cry, and many more - have a delay timer associated with them that prevents damage being dealt by another such attack. The problem arises because such attacks are all considered equal. If a monster is being attacked by Shock Web, hitting it with Nova will have no effect. Likewise, use a friendly-PvP mode to cast a continual Shock Web on another player, and some nasty monster attacks in the game (like Baal's cold attack) will be unable to touch them. Crystalion explains it all in detail, along with a partial list of affected skills, right here. More study is ongoing.

I've been giving Paladins so much attention lately, but perhaps they deserve it. Crystalion chimes in once again on the Lounge forums with evidence of why Sanctuary rocks:
[Blizzard's readme doesn't] mention that having the Sanctuary aura up apparently grants your melee and ranged attacks the ability to ignore undead resistance to physical completely.

In other words, in some situations, Sanctuary is a "one point wonder."
Read more in the forum thread.

In site maintenance news, I've added D2Data.Net to the Community section. The site is a wealth of raw statistical data.

MongoJerry has once again completed an amazing tale of a character type in the wilds of Diablo II 1.10s beta. This time around, he went for a unique, enjoyable playing style - dare I use the word "variant" - the Pacifist Hero. A character devoted not to killing, but to protecting the misguided invaders of Sanctuary from death while removing the cause of their evil: Diablo's act and quest bosses. As MongoJerry wrote, "the playing style and strategies I had to use were so unlike anything I'd ever used in Diablo II before. It was like this whole new game opened before my eyes." Read the entire tale of how MongoJerry pulled this off through a huge Lounge forum thread here!
What Pandemonium?

The Pandemonium Fortress forum, used for setting up games of Diablo II, has been removed due to low activity levels. All threads from that forum have been moved over to Atma's Tavern, if you need to find any of them. If you're looking to set up a game or meet fellow Lurkers on Battle.Net, you can do so there now.

Crystalion is continuing his bug hunt that he started back in July in a Maggot Lair forum thread that has been growing ever since. A discovery posted today warrants serious attention before 1.10 goes final. I'll tease you here and then you can read the details for yourself:
...an Assassin could grant themselves the Whirlwind skill without having to use the runeworded claw to WW with (instead using an elite polearm, etc.). Another example: a party of exploiters could "pass the roach", giving each player some special skill from an uber item even though none of them was still using/equiping it.
Here's hoping this one gets fixed in time. Kudos again go to Crystalion for superb bug hunting.

Negativity
Diablo II News

Thanks to research done on the Amazon Basin forums, along with study from Ruvanal and Crystalion, new revelations have been uncovered regarding the damage algorithms used by the new "immunity" system in 1.10 (where immune monsters are not necessarily immune). In this forum thread, it is revealed that while you cannot score a negative *total* damage against a target, it is possible to heavily diminish the damage you perform when you strike an enemy with an attack type that is resisted over 100%. This is because each *component* of your damage is not checked to see if it is negative. For example, if a monster has 150% resistance to lightning and you use an attack with a major lightning component, the lightning damage performed would be negative. This begs the question - is it possible to actually heal a monster by attacking it?

Crystalion is at it again with a thread that summaries everything you could want to know about how hireling experience is tallied, including tips on the fastest ways to level up a mercenary.
If the xp you see your hireling get when you make a kill is at or nearly at the "cap/3" number then you know you're doing as well as you reasonably can. If instead it is a lot below that number, you should consider finding more suitable prey.
So what does he mean by the "cap/3" number? Read on to find out.

Snafaru has created an Excel spreadsheet which allows you to calculate your Hammerdin's potential damage per hammer according to your Blessed Hammer, Blessed Aim, Vigor, and Concentration skill levels. Using this, you can fantasize about having level 40 in each skill and performing 27,462.5 damage per hammer to monsters. Unrealistic, yes, but a nice fantasy all the same. Thankfully, it also calculates realistic values! Try it out.

If you had suggested to Paladin players before 1.10 that they max Prayer, you would have been laughed out of town. A current discussion amongst Lurkers shows that times have changed, however. Thanks to synergies, Paladins can be great party players, having their cake - and eating it too, with the skills Holy Bolt, Blessed Hammer, and Fist of the Heavens providing offense. Paladins aren't just for Vengeance anymore!

MongoJerry is at it again, and he's just completed his saga of a Singing Barbarian through Hell difficulty in the 1.10 beta test. Using the Trang-Oul's set to give him some spells to attack with (no weapon attacks, period) on the physical immunes, the Barbarian Gunter braved the monster hordes thanks once again to an AI-modifying skill. Guess which one. Singing Barbarians are nothing new, but the old singing builds would run into quite a few problems in 1.10. See how MongoJerry managed via the thread and its many replies.

Electronic Arts and Origin held a promotional event on August 21-22 to display a pre-alpha version of Ultima X: Odyssey, an upcoming massively multiplayer online role playing game, and a direct competitor of Blizzard's upcoming World of Warcraft. I was invited to attend, and in my report I've shared my thoughts about the game. What does this have to do with Diablo II? Go and find out in the articles area!
