Diablo News

Bored waiting for that Stress Test email (or, even worse, waiting for it to download)?  Spend some time with some quizzes.  Layil has a challenging Variants quiz for the sadomasochists out there, to test your knowledge of variant rules and strategy.

And Jarulf is celebrating the release of Jarulf's Guide to Diablo and Hellfire version 1.60 with a Diablo quiz of his own (warning: it's tough).  What's new in version 1.60?

  • Added a massive chapter detailing information about the monster AI scripts and other related information.
  • The list of people acknowledged has been updated.
  • Updates and corrections to chapter about experience points.
  • Added information about character naming.
  • Updated the repair and recharge costs.
  • Rewrote the item price calculation chapter some.
  • Corrected some errors and expanded information about prefix and suffix selection.
  • Corrections regarding item creation for staves.
  • Added probabilities for unique items being found.
  • Updated and corrected information about some spells including Chain Lightning, Mana Shield, Telekinesis, Flame Wave, Fire Wall, Lightning Wall and Ring of Fire (both in spell chapter and in battle chapter).
  • Removed all information regarding distance for spells as it does not apply.
  • Some added information about traps.
  • Corrected information about monster hit point regeneration.
  • Added information about second attacks for many monsters, including timing information.
  • Some additional information about the Skeleton King and the Skeleton King quest.
  • Corrected some resistances and immunities for unique and special monsters.
  • Added information about what and how monsters and players are targetable, especially in reference to walking.
  • Updated the command section for Battle.net.
  • Added information about channels on Battle.net.
  • Small corrections and additions all over the guide.

Diablo II Stress Test Guide
Diablo II News

Charis has completed his D2 Stress Test Guide.  Inside he gives tips on the interface, playing the Barbarian successfully, and a guided tour of the lands of the test.  A good read if you've been selected (or hope to be) to get you up to speed with all those closed beta testers who are already familiar with Diablo II.
The Netherworld
Diablo News

No, that's not your belly button, it's a mod!  There's a new mod in town, called Netherworld (actually, it's the mod's second incarnation).  The mod's got a lot of features.  I'll list some of the more interesting ones:

Golem co-op (they won't attack each other), with owner and hit point displays in orange text and messages when the golems die
Confuse spell which acts like Hellfire's berserk, making monsters fight each other
Precognition spell which shows the true name and ID features of dropped items (rogues have this automatically!)
Shakedown spell which gives a chance of a monster dropping two items instead of just one when they die
Shrines have a 5% chance of misfiring, casting teleport on you
Artifacts which act as portable shrines, usable when you wish it
Emperor's prefix which can inflict quadruple damage, but has a chance of healing a monster
Promotion suffix which improves qlvl of drops by 4 for normal monsters and by 2 for unique monsters
Monster display includes how many hit points are left

And many more suffixes, prefixes, spells (a Telekill spell, woohoo), monsters, graphics, and sounds.  It looks like a great mod with vast improvements over the original.  And you'll like Wirt.  I promise that.  :)  Go and check out the full list of features and download Netherworld here.

D2 Stress Test Begins

It's started!  The first round of emails have gone out today for Stress Test players.  Remember, if you didn't get an email, it doesn't mean you're not in the beta; you just aren't in this round.  The waiting game will continue for most.  Without the access code, the download is useless, so don't bother downloading it unless you get one.

There is nothing wrong with your browser!  Do not adjust your monitor.  Welcome to the new Lurker Lounge.  The goals of easier site navigation along with the continued enjoyment of fast page loading times were the keys to its design.  This layout is the result of almost two weeks of toil and love, and I hope you agree that it's much better.

As if to steal my thunder, the setup I have for lurkerlounge.net-games.com isn't working sometimes.  If you're getting blank pages or "document contains no data" messages, the old URLs based off of www.personal.psu.edu/rdm139 still work.

A definite "check-it-out" item is Diabloii.Net's E3 coverage.  They include lots of data (and I mean lots!) on Act 2 and 3 along with each Diablo II character class' skills.  Spoiler info is kept to a minimum and they have warnings.

WarLocke's final upgrade to the Scratchpad for many months is complete and now available on the Lounge here.  His 31 page document (yes, it's a Word Document now) includes stats on experience points, Life/Mana/Stamina/AR/DR formulae, and lists of unique and set items.  A handy download for Diablo II data lovers, so go and grab it.
More on the Mini-Guide

Some info in on the CompUSA Mini-Guide from :
Well, it basically has about 3-4 pages about each class, breaking down the skill trees.  It gives descriptions about each, but as you would expect, gives no numbers (which are probably changing anyway).  Most of the stuff I was familiar with looked correct, but the higher level skills were new to me.

I really just glanced through it and tossed it aside.  I guess that means I wasn't real impressed, since there is much better info around on the web.

Thanks, Randy.  I guess it's too early to expect statistical data.

Stolen horrifically from Diabloii.Net is word that CompUSA, a retail chain of stores in North America, has copies of a 24 page mini-guide to Diablo II for free.  Also included is a $3 gift certificate off the purchase of any BradyGames strategy guide.  If anyone picks up one of these, let me know if it's a pile of crud, quality, or what.
Closings

Two Diablo sites have disappeared today.
Woody's Diablo Asylum has officially closed.  Read Woody's final letter for a full explanation and a look to the future.  Goodbyes are going around on the Asylum Message Board.  I'd like to personally thank Woody for starting a movement that added to the longevity and interest of Diablo for hundreds of players, and for providing a home for that movement for so long.

Secondly, Roland's Newbie Guide to Diablo has taken a nasty dive due to a system crash.  It's apparently gone for good, as Roland states on the DSF.  A terrible loss.

Small personal statement: I suppose changes are inevitable as we are in this transition period between the original and the sequel of Diablo.  The goal of the Lounge remains the same, however: the preservation of good strategy and the promotion of discovery into the game's inner workings.  Sometimes I don't thank people enough for their contributions, for the Lounge is truly a site made by the community, not by any one person.  The willingness of so many people to help make this site what it is today overwhelms me sometimes, and I'd just like to again give the community a high five and a hearty thank you.  This is a very exciting time for Diablo fans, with D2 possibly just a month or two away.

Diabloii.Net has a real treat up today, a complete jigsaw-constructed map of the Stress Test portion of Diablo II.  Much like Tanja[BWO]'s map of Tristram in design, this huge picture can give you an idea of the massive size of levels in the game.  They also have maps of some other areas here.  Some moderate quest spoilers can be found in some of the maps.

Blizzard webdesigner (and online D2 strategy guide writer) GFrazier is looking for some assistance in constructing a Diablo II FAQ.  If you have questions about Diablo II (not about the Stress Test, however), send him word under his Beta Buzz post here.  He's also looking for suggestions on Blizzard's D2 website.
Realms Beyond Diablo
Diablo II News

Sunday, 14 May 2000
Charis and KingOfPain have collaborated to form an all-new Diablo II site, Realms Beyond Diablo.  They summed it up pretty well, so I'll quote them:
This site doesn't dwell on the ordinary. It describes a world on the edge in Diablo, Diablo 2, and beyond. Here you will find characters, stories, analyses, guides, and tips that go far beyond the typical Diablo site. We seek to build on and expand the themes that linked Variants and Beyond Naked Mages together - the idea that the the game is most fun when played legitimately, cooperatively, and seeking the most challenge.

Go and check it out, especially Charis' beta reports on Ironman play and other D2 nuances.  Great reads!
