The (currently small) section on Classic DSF Posts is born today. Featuring the posts from the past which rocked the community, they are preserved there for posterity. Currently up are Crystalion's "of Thieves" discovery, P(IG)'s Cudgel, and Dimitri's proof of clock-based item seeding. I'm looking for more! I'd appreciate it if anyone who has more classics archived sends them in. Kudos to Perry for getting this all started with his Historical Posts thread on the DSF. I'd been looking for the old posts which I remember for quite some time.
You don't have to be the first person to sign up, you don't have to camp the web page reloading, all you have to do is signup any time during that 24 hour time. So feel free to go to sleep and wake up and sign up Monday evening.

Excitement over the upcoming Diablo II Beta is reaching a fever pitch on Battle.Net. One of the biggest factors fueling the fire are sightings of Diablo II players on Battle.Net channels.
, author of the Abysmal mod for Diablo, was a witness to such an event last night, and today's special STSI shows the new icon in action.

Variant Achievements
Diablo News

Two big variant achievements this week, all by the popular Barbarian variant. First up is Skull(BAR)'s quest to be a Barbarian King. A short writeup but a hearty congrats on his success! Second is a trio of Barbarians clearing nightmare/hell. ChariSparta`BAR, Animal(BAR), and Skull(BAR) (who apparently wanted an encore!) descended into Hell's depths on nightmare difficulty to slay Diablo - and won. As usual for Charis, he has a stellar writeup of the event on the Asylum board, so check it out.
Distance Compared to To-Hit%?
Diablo News

Tuesday, 14 March 2000
There are lots of great discussions going on lately. Jarulf and Dr. Zed have been having a debate on the effects of distance on to-hit% for arrows. You can follow it here, but a warning: it gets rather complex. This discussion, however, prompted Rogue strategist extraordinaire Claudio to do a real-world (well, game-world) study on the effects of distance. Read his excellent summaries here. Currently it seems that a player's chance to hit a target takes a real plummet when the distance becomes high, but there are factors involved such as character level.
Blocking Bonus Bug
Diablo News

Sunday, 12 March 2000
Wow! Jarulf pulls off another whopper with his revelation about the problems with the blocking bonus which he noticed years back was in the code but never seemed to work. Characters should get a bonus to their blocking ability, but tests showed that the bonus was zero in all cases. This makes things rough on warriors. But it seems that Jarulf has pinned down the cause. A quote from the Lounge forum:
The reason for this seem to be that the game does never save this bonus and it is not set up again when a character is loaded. The end effect is that it will only exists during the first time you play a character. Every new game after that, the bonus is lost.

I'd like to point out
' new editorial which counters
's "About the Cheap Exploitation of a Bug." Charis defends players which don't go out of their way to annul Blizzard's bug. Read up about it in the somewhat revamped editorials section.
Scanner Sensation
Diablo News

Sunday, 12 March 2000
Over the past week, the hot topic on the DSF has been about scanners, their legitimacy, and their good and bad effects. Quite a few good discussions in the mix, one started up by Nystul here and a stunning *long*dissertation on how scanners work by Jarulf. One good quote:
Scanners, or rather the creator of scanners have in my opinion missed out on asking themselves who is the "target user" for the program. Or rather, they have created a program for "everyone". The expert user can probably value the program and all the strange output (I for one do and have used it as a good tool for example in making it easier to check stuff for my Guide). But seriously, what good is a string of hex numbers to a user that hardly know what qlvl means??

...go to
for his successful 3@30 ultra-pure LAW run! (Translation: nice job for killing Diablo on Hell difficulty, solo, using a warrior with almost no armor, not being able to buy things (or identify things) in town, and with no books read. Whew!) Don't hesitate to peruse his testimonial on the congregational bulletin board with the moniker "DSF" (Translation: read his report on the DSF, it's good).
