Ranting on the No-Stun Mage Bug
Diablo News
Written by Bolty

Been quite a while since we've had a new editorial here, but today comes a good one by on the Cheap Exploitation of a Bug, the No-Stun with Mana Shield bug which is abused by countless Battle.Net players.  Quorrell's take is that the practice is far from legit - do you agree?  Check out his editorial.  Yes, by the way, I agree with him.  And the editorials section sure has seen some neglect lately.  Find yourself making the same arguments to people over and over?  Get your viewpoint publicized and send it in!

Diablo v1.08...or Not
Diablo News

Gruesomely ripped off from Diabloii.Net comes this light fare news tidbit, a post from Mike Huang on the Diablo II Suggestions Forum regarding the possibility of a Diablo version 1.08.  Says Mike,
I don't know of any current outstanding critical bugs that need to be fixed in Diablo, so I don't forsee a patch at present unless a patch is made necessary by a future Blizzard product.

Oh well.  Of course, I don't think he's aware of the two obscure bugs known that are guaranteed to crash the game instantly...are YOU?  They're in the DSF Buglist...look for the bold text.

Not Again?

sends word that and have released a new version of the ME mod (2/12) which you can grab from their website, Diablomods.
We have modified the Middle Earth Mod a bit. We found out that the "holiness" effect does not work on bows. Could have thought of that earlier, since "blood" and "vampires" do not work, either :-)  We thus modified some unique items which had the "holiness" effect to now use a different effect, but we did not take the suffix from bows, since this could cause item morphing. For fun, we also put in some new sound effects. To hear them (and in order to play the game), you need to download the new "sounds.zip" file and unzip it into your Diablo directory (with subdirectories). The sounds should go into the "monsters" and "sfx" directories. You do not need to download the "graphics" file again, it has not changed. Only the dat (or exe) and the sounds file.

Ironman expert has accomplished a real Ironman feat, as he's beaten Diablo in Nightmare difficulty in Single Player mode.  He has a full writeup, chock full of strategy, as part of his unbelievably useful Ironman guide, The Forge.  Check out his achievement, which has yet to end as he enters Hell difficulty...

On another note, my apologies for the lack of updates.  I've been taking a semi-vacation from the site for the last three weeks.  Frankly, when I started this site, I had expected at least the D2 Beta to be released by now.  As the delays mounted, I found it harder to keep the same enthusiasm.  Add that to schoolwork (the life of an Electrical Engineering student) and...distractions (cough, Final Fantasy VIII) and you have a neglected website.  Things will pick up around here again.

V&K Middle Earth Mod Released
Diablo News
Written by Bolty
Monday, 24 January 2000
Varaya and Khan, the makers of the extremely popular V&K mod for Diablo and Hellfire, have just released their new mod based on Tolkien's Middle Earth.  It's available at their new mod page.  The mod making duo have been gearing for a mod which replaces the themes of Diablo with the themes of the Middle Earth fantasy world.  Some of the features in the mod are listed at their site:
- we threw out anything we felt was not "middle earthish" in the original Diablo 1.07 game. Well, at least everything we could throw out, that is :-)
- new monsters. Some of them even with new graphics (that is why you have to download so much)
- tons of new bosses. Many of them will seem somewhat familiar if you are a Tolkien fan :-)
- new base items
- new prefixes/suffixes
- new unique items. LOTS of them. Every single one has been replaced.
- other than with the "original" 1.07 mod, we balanced the game to our liking right from the start. So, for example, in this Middle Earth mod we put more emphasis on the lower armour types - i.e. leather armour and chain mail are much more important than plate mail. You will have trouble even finding a plate mail armour (of course we adjusted the AC ranges of chain mail etc. a bit to compensate). Two handed weapons have been improved somewhat. For a beginning warrior, axes are far more interesting now than before, for example.

Check out more about this exciting release at V&K's new Diablomods site!  Be sure to read the download instructions as there are technical issues with the large download size.

In other news, the STSI feature of the site may need to be put on hold for a time due to server space limitations.  More space is being allocated, but that might not be for a week or two.  Thanks for your patience.  Update: well, that got fixed fast.  More room, more STSIs.

So Blizzard wants to test server loads in the Diablo II Beta, huh?  Well, they already have enough problems.  Recently it was revealed that Battle.Net had served up over 11,000,000 games in ONE DAY, with another record of over 100,000 users on simultaneously.  Anyone else remember the early days when you'd be lucky to see 4,000 users online?

There are two fine reads on the strategy forum this morning.  has a post detailing his further studies on the Constricting Ring.  If you want to get to the point, be sure to skip ahead to the conclusions (chuckle).  And don't miss 's long reply to the article to learn some inner workings of the game engine.  Next up is Talon's strategies for new, low level rogues - strategies gained while playing LoL style, an increasingly popular Diablo gameplay variation.  Check that out here.
