Dr. Zed's Diablo Mod
Diablo News
Written by Bolty
Wednesday, 27 October 1999
Many readers have emailed me asking why I only list four mods in my modifications section of my Links list.  Well, the answer is that those four are the best and most-played mods out there.  There are quite a few mods that really aren't that good or aren't much-played, but I feel those four are the exceptions.  Well, here's another exception.  Dr. Zed's new mod is a quality conversion.  DZM for short, it provides many new features - and one huge one.  No duping!  Dr. Zed claims to have beaten the duping bug that allows duplication of items without a trainer.  Check out his mod page, and read up on the details of his mod in his documentation.  I think you'll agree with me that it looks great.

To kick off the mod and get player interest, this Saturday will attend a "release party" (although the mod has been out for a little while) on Battle.Net.  I'll be playing, and I hope many of you will give the mod a shot.  We can all start new characters and have some fun.  He'll be releasing the newest version of his work this Friday/Saturday, so make sure you stop by the site and pick it up.  See you on Saturday (all day long for the multi-national audience) in channel Variants!  (Yes, a mod isn't a variant, but the channel provides a good atmosphere.  Respect the variant players while you're there, and use a DZM name tag.)

Dr. Zed's Diablo Mod page added to the Links section.

The Strategy section has grown with the addition of 's Constricting Ring Analysis.  There's more to this unique item than it seems, and he details the best uses for the ring.  A good read for anyone who likes equipment strategies!
Obscure DSF Trivia

I've been pretty busy the last few days, hence the lack of news.  But there's things coming later today.  And Nystul has a great non-strategy post (shame on you, Nystul :-)) on the Diablo Strategy Forum.  Think you know your DSF history?  Try his (quite tough) quiz and see how much you can remember.  Or, in my case, how much you've forgotten...

Jarulf's Guide in PDF Format
Diablo News
Written by Bolty
Wednesday, 20 October 1999
No longer solely in Word format, Jarulf's Guide has been converted to PDF by the author himself.  has announced on the DSF that his fantastic, comprehensive guide to Diablo is now multi-platform thanks to the availability of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader for many operating systems.  Head over and pick it up if you need it.

Also, Network54 apparently had some problems yesterday and some messages were lost, including the new forum layout.  The downtime affected many of the Diablo community forums.  Network54 has issued a formal apology.  I can hear Cat laughing all the way from Germany.  :-)

Kevin Lambert, author of Kevin's Diablo Backup, is in need of some assistance.  His site, Kevin's Diablo Page, disappeared some time ago.  It turns out that he had a hard drive crash and lost all of his web pages and FAQs.  He needs help!  If you have any of his pages backed up somewhere, send them to his .  See his site for details.

No, don't adjust your browser, things have changed.  As usual, I wasn't satisfied with the old layout of the site (and the name).  Welcome to the Lurker Lounge, the new name for the new layout.  Everything's still here.  I wanted a new layout to make things easier for the eventual switch to a Diablo II site, and to yet keep the same tradition of fast-loading non graphical pages.  Like it?  Don't like it?  Anything messed up?  Leave me some feedback.  I'd like to thank the eternally Damned one who drives a Van for suggesting the name, even if it was probably a joke.  :-)  Hah!

I've tested this layout in Netscape 4.61 and Internet Explorer 5.  There may be some quirks in other browsers, there's no way I can know for sure.

Good DSF Posts

Been some good reads on the DSF lately.  I'll break it down...
1) An explanation of the dangers of lag makes for a good discourse by .

2) Finnan Haddie points out a little-known effect of Hidden Shrines and obtaining indestructibility.  It was news to me!

3) The interactive combat calculator being designed by is really getting there.  See his announcement of the latest version here.

4) On the back pages you can see where an innocent enough question can evolve into a great strategy discussion.  Some very good reads in that thread.

In order to avoid getting completely swamped with bugs, as they've been discovered at a fast pace lately, I've updated the DSF Buglist.  The newest bugs are listed at the bottom of each section.  Big thanks to everyone who has been helping to make this the most complete buglist possible.

...on the last few days of news!
1) says goodbye.  A major loss for the DSF - one I hope is truly temporary.  Give your regards to a great reg who's been around a very long time.

2) converted his Constricting Ring analysis way back from version 1.05 to be correct with Diablo version 1.07.  A good read to know everything there is to know about this peculiar ring.

3) The Abysmal mod for Diablo has been updated.  As announced on the DSF by the mod's author, :
The major changes include tweaking up Nightmare and Hell difficulties, especially Hell/Hell is REALLY something now...

Also made the mod more 'unfriendly' to Sorcerors, it was favoring them too much, but should be more in balance now... Co-oping them with a Rogue or a Warrior should be a much more pleasant now :) Major changes include changes in spell damages for instance. Other changes include Identify as a skill for Sorcerors and Infravision to Rogues.

Go check out the details and grab the latest version at the Abysmal Homepage.

4) and have begun work on the Highlander Tournament, a special competition among DSF posters/readers.  It involves a system of "last person standing wins," with deaths from other competitors ending your involvement in the tournament.  Check out the rules and details in Omega's DSF post, and stop by the Highlander Tournament Forum to sign up and get the latest information!

More updates tomorrow...
