Great DSF Meet
Diablo News

Sunday, 12 September 1999
Yesterday's DSF meeting went very well.  Thanks go to everyone who stopped by and made it a big event!  Ironman seemed to be the hot game that day, and quite a few Ironman games got played among DSF'ers.  Speaking of which, KingOfPain has another big update to his still-unfinished Ironman guide - "The Forge."  Check it out, a very good read.
The State of the Asylum
Diablo News

Friday, 10 September 1999
The home of the Variant community, Woody's Diablo Asylum, has been missing now for some time.  Woody finally made an appearance on the Asylum Message Board and explained the situation.  The Asylum needs a home!  Help out the founder of the Variants if you can.
Moriah's Melee Mayhem
Diablo News

This is really spiffy.  has created a Javascript FORM which "will calculate the statistics that a character, any character, in Classic Diablo needs to combat any monster at any difficulty."  He's beta testing two different versions of the script here and here.  Give it a try and report any bugs on the DSF.  This will be a great tool when it's finished!

We have another level 50 BNM!  M. reports in on the DSF with his stunning accomplishment (especially since he never gave an announcement he was close).  A major congrats to M. for joining in the ranks of people who have a lot of...dedication.  :)  Nice job, M.
Just What We Need

I was thinking today about what the Diablo community really needed most, and it came to me: another forum!  Right.  Anyway, the BDSC Forum is born.  Feel free to use it.  Aren't you glad you now have another forum to read along with Claudio's, Omega's, Shooter's, the DSF, Ice's, Woody's, KingOfPain's, Moriah's, and more?  Hey, that's a pretty good forum list if I do say so myself.

Varaya and Khan are at it again with the 09/03 version of the V&K mod for Diablo.  What's new?

Go grab it at Diablomods.

The World Will Change

Check out Blizzard.com.  Apparently hype for the 5th, when Blizzard will announce what their new projects are and go public with them.  And, weirdly enough, if you refresh (reload) the page, the Blizzard icon at the bottom sometimes changes color.  Go figure.
Not so "Hidden" Shrines
Diablo News
Written by Bolty
Friday, 03 September 1999
strikes again on the DSF, following up on the large discussions about the true effects of Hidden Shrines.  It appears that the behaviors of Hidden, Enchanted, and Mysterious shrines are finally, conclusively known.  (Van was right; hi Van!)

Hidden Shrine Inc. is now closed, as sees no reason to continue gathering Hidden Shrine results.  So, after two and a half years, we finally can prove that Enchanted Shrines will reduce Chain Lightning more than any other spell.  Hidden Shrines will prefer the right slot (left-hand) for durability reduction.  Mysterious Shrines raise dexterity more often than any other stat.

The inevitable "bug or feature" debate has been started on the issue by Finnan Haddie.  Like the "of Thieves" bug prior to Diablo 1.07, is it cheating to take advantage of this knowledge?

Official Variants
Diablo II News
Written by Bolty
Thursday, 02 September 1999
Mike Huang from Blizzard North revealed something most interesting today in the Diabloii.net community forum.  Seems that Blizzard is going to have "hardcore" characters in Diablo II.  What is hardcore?
The hardcore option is a more difficult way of playing the game. Taking it's cue from the old classic dungeon hack type games, you only have one life. Once you die, that's it, the character is gone forever (or rather, if you log on again, you appear in b.net as a ghost). You cannot be resurrected, it is a permanent death.

This sounds VERY familiar.  It's the Immortal Variant!  The variant community had a collective laugh today, but consider the implications.  Imagine if the BNM (Beyond Naked Mage) was an official variant in Diablo, with special treatment and titles.  Read more in Mike Huang's post.

Handy Dandy Tables

Thanks to on the DSF for pointing out the handy Experience Point Table on the 'Net created by an alt.games.diablo regular.  It can help you find what dungeon levels your characters should fight in to maximize their experience per monster gain.  Added to the Links section.

introduces the Infiltrator variant on the Asylum Message Board.  And, by the way, Woody's Diablo Asylum is STILL missing.  Not a word has been uttered by Woody; he seems to be AWOL.
