Diablo II Worst Rare Contest PDF Print E-mail

What's the worst rare in the game?  That's the question a contest here at the Lounge attempted to answer in September.  Diablo II fans were encouraged to send in the worst rare items they'd found on the realms, and the results were...interesting.  Divided into two categories, "Most ironically useless" and "Most pathetically useless," these rares are the worst of the worst.

Most Ironically Useless

Ironically useless items are items that would be fantastic, if it weren't for some fatal flaw that makes them completely pointless to use.  There were some very good entries in this category.

Fiend ChainThere were two runners-up here, both from . Try this fiendish Fiend Chain, a SASH with 2 DR, a handful of really useless additions, and a whopping level requirement of 41!  Ouch.  Don't think the uselessness of this rare can be beat?  Try out...

Bone BrandThis amazingly useless Bone Brand.  Enhanced damage, indeed - why would a level 45 character ever want this?  It DOES have +38 to life, though, which prevented it from being the most ironically useless piece of crud in the contest.  But kudos to Donna for providing these two incredibly bad rare items.  I suppose it would be something to be proud of, but...yeesh, what bad luck.

So, what rare was so ironically useless that it beat out these fine specimens?  Read on...

The Winner

Dire Crack

Hey now, enhanced damage, +132 to attack rating, poison damage, and some lightning damage to boot!  Not bad, huh?  Oh yeah, it's on a...Grim Wand.  Hmm.  Somehow I don't picture any Necromancers using this one.  Imagine your excitement when seeing a rare Grim Wand drop, only to find it is completely stacked with melee enhancements.  Congratulations go to for finding this utterly useless wand!  He is the winner of the Most Ironically Useless category for the Worst Rare Contest.  He wins...absolutely nothing, except for the "pride" of having found something so completely and totally pointless.  Maybe he can trade it for a Stone of Jordan...maybe not.

Most Pathetically Useless

And now, the battle for the overall most totally pathetic item that shouldn't really be called a rare.  You know, those rare items that you'll get from a monster in the Den of Evil and just groan because you know it's going to be bad.

Rune BlazerRunner-up in this category is the Rune Blazer on the right from .

Strangely enough, most of the submissions I received for this category came from Quilted and Leather Armors.  I'm not sure if that's just coincidence or if the game has a higher chance of generating really crappy rare suffixes and prefixes from those armors.

The Winner

But what's worse than the Rune Blazer?  Steel your eyes, for you are about to behold the most incredibly, stupefying pathetically useless piece of crap that can be generated by the game...the mighty, uncomparable, Beast Brow!

Beast BrowAmazing, huh?  Could you imagine the trading potential of this item?  I'd bet that , the winner of this contest, could get 10 Stones of Jordan, 15 Frostburns, and 8 Silks of the Victor for this one.  I don't know if we should be excited for him for winning or sorry for him that he actually wasted a Scroll of Identify on it.  But either way, no one can take this "victory" away from him, so congratulations, VV!

I'd like to thank everyone for their submissions.  It took me a while to whittle them down, and I think I've seen more crappy rare items than I'd care to for a good few months or so.  :)  Congratulations again to the "winners" and enjoy your rare items!
