Holophonic sound is recreating very convincing surround sound to be played back through headphones. Even though these are 2 channel recordings, you can really hear them in 3D. Not only do you hear things behind you, you also hear things from below and above. I haven't found any that convincingly sound like something is in front of you, but I suspect that's due to your eyes overriding the aural input. Anyhow, it's pretty nifty.

You will need to use headphones for these clips to be effective. You probably won't get the effect whatsoever if you use desktop speakers unless you hold them beside your ears or something.

This is a clip of the sound of someone shaking a matchbox. Towards the end you can hear the matchbox making vertical circles. It made my wife nauseous when she listened to it.

This one has some nifty effects, but I never really got the feeling of true 3D sound with it.

Hairdryer. This one also gives you the effect of up and down.

Turn the lights off and listen to this alone. It's pretty creepy.

I'd like to see this sort of method used for movies. I sometimes watch DVDs with headphones on so as not to disturb my wife, and I envision an alternate sound track being offered just for this. Full 3D sound through a regular pair of headphones would be awesome.

It would also be cool for games, but due to the process of recording these sounds I don't see how this can be feasible. Still a neat idea though.

Wow, this is really amazing! This would definitely help out in the gaming arena. I wonder what will be next?

I didn't find this one creepy. I expected, even wanted, to feel the warmth of her breath and the brush of her lips on my ears. This is interesting stuff, but I can't really see it working for movies. I would have to hear something that put a sound in front of me, otherwise I can only see it for something where the bad guy/thing/monster is coming up on you from behind and then the effect would be broken because you would want to turn your head way before the idiot on screen does. I would love to hear more of this. If they could make it work for movies, games, etc. it would be fantastic.
