Does Battle.net need to have high-speed internet, like Xbox Live does? Even when I try to play Starcraft online, it says I have a poor internet connection or something like that..

No. You have to fix up your firewall/router though. Open up port 6112. Go search on the internet http://www.google.com for instructions in your firewall/router. Also don't download stuff while playing.
