Yes, this was clumsy if it was indeed a joke (I wonder) but to project something beyond "man, some people can't tell a joke" onto this less than brilliant pair seems an overreaction.

It is funny, in a slightly sick way, but maybe there were trolling.

Or, maybe they lied to the police when this came up.
