I remember having the same thing in single player a while ago(while trying out trainers of course, I don't think many people max out stats in Classic Diablo SP) and I hadn't patched it either IIRC.
If the update doesn't fix it and you really don't want to find any shrines, there's also an option to remove the points with a trainer, but I personally do not recommend it. First it seems a bit cheesy* and second - you might mess up your char if you don't know what you are doing.
Hope the patch fixes it.
* I believe the rules for Elemental Mage team(or was it Wizards?) say that you can remove the birth-given firebolt using a trainer from the mage who chooses not to use fire-based spells; just a parallel.
