Water Elemental DPS calculation and Notes
#1
Summon Water Elemental
------------------------------
cost: 16% of base mana (approx: 225 at 70)
Cooldown: 3 minutes (180 seconds)
Cooldown when using Coldsnap: 160 seconds (see below)
Duration: 45 seconds
damage per mana: casts_per_summon * spell_damage / mana_cost

The water elemental provides a significant boost to frost mage dps for very little mana while generating no threat for the mage.

Waterbolt Spell
------------------
cast speed: 2.5 seconds
Base Damage: 486-588 dmg (537 avg)
damage coefficient: 0.25
Crit Rate: 0.05
Crit Damage Multiplier: 0.5
miss rate vs 70: 4% or 0.96
miss rate vs 73: 17% or 0.83

spell_damage: base_damage + damage_coefficient * mages_bonus_damage
spell_damage: 537 + 0.25 * mages_bonus_damage

average_spell_damage: spell_damage * (1 + crit_rate * crit_damage_multiplier) * miss_rate
average_spell_damage: spell_damage * 1.025 * miss_rate

casts per summon = 45 / 2.5 = 18
damage per summon = casts_per_summon * average_spell_damage

AVG_DPS = damage_per_summon / cooldown
AVG_DPS = 18 * 1.025 * (537 + 0.25 * mages_bonus_damage) * miss_rate / 160
AVG_DPS = 0.1153125 * miss_rate * (537 + 0.25 * mages_bonus_damage)

AVG_DPS_VS_70: 0.1153125 * 0.96 * (537 + 0.25 * mages_bonus_damage)
AVG_DPS_VS_70: 59.4459 + 0.027675 * mages_bonus_damage

AVG_DPS_VS_73: 0.1153125 * 0.83 * (537 + 0.25 * mages_bonus_damage)
AVG_DPS_VS_73: 51.395934375 + 0.02392734375 * mages_bonus_damage

Sample Waterbolt Damages
---------------------------------
average dps vs 70 with 1090 bonus spell damage: 89.61165
average dps vs 73 with 1090 bonus spell damage: 77.4767390625

average dps vs 70 with 2000 bonus spell damage: 114.7959
average dps vs 73 with 2000 bonus spell damage: 99.250621875

Freeze Spell
---------------
ranged frost nova, very useful for keeping mobs trapped while using blizzard. you can gather the mobs and use your mages frost nova first,
then use the water elementals the moment they break free. By the time they break free again you either have your mages frost nova very close to being ready again or they are already dead.

Using Coldsnap
------------------
without using coldsnap you can summon a water elemental every 3 minutes, on average. However, if you cast the water elemental and then immediately use coldsnap (to begin it's cooldown) then summon another one immediately after the first one dies 45 seconds later, you will be able to summon 3 elementals in an 8 minute time period. This brings the cooldown time to 160 seconds on average.
