Who's dead? And why? Well, it turns out that these two Beyond Naked Mages have gotten themselves in a real pickle. A Beyond Naked Mage, or BNM, is a variant character that can only use cursed equipment. As a result, they may wear items which reduce their vitality and hit points - which has the hilarious (ok, for everyone but them) result of killing them in town if they died on dungeon level 16. Since a character cannot lose their equipment when they die on that level, they appear in town again with 10 hit points - which are then reduced by their items to 0. They die in town, unable to resurrect themselves. The only way out is to get help from a friend, here in this screenshot to save the day.
