WIRTISTOPHELES
For Hellfire: Fixed v1.21 (18 July 2003)
WHAT IS THIS?
Wirtistopheles is an expansion for Hellfire: Fixed v1.21. It's not official. Not licensed. Not authorized. In essence, it's a mod for a mod.
Wirtistopheles adds a new "dungeon" for you to explore and the opportunity to finally kill that peg-legged bastard! What, I ask you, could be more satisfying than putting that brat in his grave?
Oh, and you might find an Easter Egg.
HOW'S THIS WORK?
Whereas Hellfire: Fixed is a modified executable -- the data is changed in the program itself -- Wirtistopheles uses the "old fashioned" style of modification: an external file loaded into memory. If you've played any of the Diablo v1.07 mods, you've likely used this sort of thing before in the form of a dat file. A program called DHack loads the data from the dat file into memory while the game is running, and, voila!, the game changes. Wirtistopheles does the same thing, except it uses a different program (made by the same individual) called GameHak.
HOW DO I USE IT?
While Hellfire: Fixed is running at a menu screen, run GameHak.
Load Wirtistopheles.hak
Activate the hack and you're ready to go.
Like Hellfire: Fixed, Wirtistopheles uses your regular characters. You won't need to make new ones, so jump right in. And, of course, your characters can go back to Hellfire: Fixed after playing Wirtistopheles.
NOTE: It's NOT a good idea to activate/deactivate mod when you're inside of a game. Exit to a menu first. Weird stuff might happen otherwise.
FAQ
- What, exactly, do you mean by "new dungeon"?
- Firstly, there is no new artwork so you won't see any new scenery. You'll be exploring dungeon levels you've seen before, only the monsters are different. Wirtistopheles takes place in the Caves.
- How difficult is this?
- Monsters are not caves-quality monsters. I'd recommend it for characters at least in their mid 20's or early 30's. Some monsters are definitely more difficult than others.
- Are drops from barrels, chests, and other dungeon sources modified?
- No. Items from dungeon sources are calculated the same as always.
- How many "new" monsters are there?
- Around 20. And, before you ask, I do not have a monster statistic table. Each base type, however, has a boss that appears on one of the dlvls (9-12) and you'll usually find at least three monster types per dlvl.
- Is Wirtistopheles connected to a quest in some way?
- Yes and no.
YES: When you enter town, talk to the Delirious Townsman near Pepin and you'll be able to talk about the quest with the townspeople. Ogden's speech when you first enter town also pertains to Wirtistopheles, and he will chat about quest after you've been below the surface. Additionally, the candle-lit books on dlvl 12 have been changed to reflect the mod's storyline.
NO: Wirtistopheles does not clear itself from your quest log after you kill him (the dialogues are tied to Butcher). So, it's not an actual quest in that sense.
- Are there any new items?
- Unfortunately, adding new base types and enchantments causes outrageous morphing. So, I couldn't do that. But there is a new unique Axe that can only drop in Wirtistopheles!
- Apocalypse, Nova, Immolation, and Stone Curse don't work!
- Wirtistopheles is the most evil being in Heaven or Hell. His very presence negates the power of strong magic.
- Where is Wirt? I can't find him!
- Since he's the villain he won't be in town. He's on the last level of the Caves.
- What's on the other dungeon levels? I can't enter them from town.
- That's a subtle "hint" to the player that they're not supposed to go there. But if you see something curious, perhaps you should investigate. And sometimes, just sometimes, the gossip of a drunk contains a glimmer of wisdom.
- Speaking of which, where the hell is Farnham?
- He's saucing up in the graveyard.
- Wirt seems to disappear sometimes?
- Unfortunately, yes. He sometimes goes a wee bit invisible. Think of it as an added bit of difficulty.
- Does this work in single player?
- No. At the moment, I don't plan on making a single player version.
- That's not fair!
- The other expansions won't be geared at single player, either.
- Other???
- I'm not taking questions, suggestions, or speculation on those. (Except from my beta testers. :) Suffice it to say I have very specific plans in mind.
- How do I become a beta tester?
