As I understand it:

0.5 points per player in game

1 point per player in party within same named area

0.5 points per player in party but NOT within named area

Add, and multiply.

I have no idea what you are talking about, check my post above for the correct XP formula.

Will the game count you as a party of one if you aren't in a party?

Yes.

And, if not does /players 2 actually DO anything OTHER than add a slightly insignificant amount of HP's to the monsters?

Yes, players 2 will add 50% more HP and 50% more xp (as well as incresed drops from monster. )
xp modifier for players 2 = (2+1)/2 = 1,5. Xp modifier for players 1 = (1+1)/2 = 1

Note: Yes, still more than slightly drunk!
