Why is this Post labeled Spam ? - Lady Vashj - 04-27-2005

I notice this thread isn't locked yet. Let's use it to talk about fun, free online RPGs that don't give us referral points for linking to them. At least until it is locked.

Obi2Kenobi,Apr 27 2005, 11:23 AM Wrote:Jim, I believe referral links are counted as spam. The poster of such links is generally not giving the links to share a cool site they found, but to just get points from you clicking.

So posting http://www.thisisacoolsite.com would not be spam (generally), while http://www.thisisacoolsite.com/refer/code-x35dkD3044mdk.html would be (especially if it is the only thing a person has ever used the account for).

And just as little further clarification. It seems that a link can be placed that includes a referral without showing in the text such as this super duper game. If you mouse over this link, your browser probably shows you the actual link. Note the "?refer=234234234". This means that the site will credit the person identified by the 234234234 with points which might get them cash or prizes or free time. They don't care if you actually sign up or not, they just want you to click to get their credit. Actually, they might want you to sign up too. It is possible that you would then be tracked through their site and the person who posted would get even more credit for actions you take on their site. A link to a site to check out will not elicit the spam guardians response where as one with the embedded referral will. (I hope I have contributed my quota of equine flogging with this response. I want to be a good Lurker. ;) )

Hi,

OK !!!  Both points are well taken, I could have e-mailed ADMIN, however I am Not questioning your Right to delete a post...I'm asking where is the rule dealing with Spam so that I, as well as Others, can determine IF the post we are about to submit it is SPAM ?

OK !!!     ALL 3 points are well taken. I'm just asking where is the Rule dealing with Spam so that I, as well as Others both members non-members can determine "IF" the post we are about to submit is SPAM ?

I'm not asking for you to write a 10 point FAQ just for Spam, just a simple one if possible...IF Not, I can live with that  :D

Many times we find a site offering something we "Think" would be of interest to this Fine Gaming community here at LL...I'm NOT trying to be difficult, just looking for an Answer to my original Question  :w00t: ahhhhhhh

What rule of thumb does LL use for judging a Post "SPAM"

OR

I don't think there's a hard and fast rule, King. Seems to me it's more of a 'Mod's opinion' kind of thing.

Close, but no cigar, friend Warlocke. :D The answer is "Mod/Admin judgment."

That rubric has been good enough for about 5 years, and the exercise of judgment by thinking adults precludes any argument about how comprehensively any rule or policy guideline achieves some perfect definition of Spam.

Hey, what's that smell, is it glue? If I sniff enough of it, will I enjoy the high, or will I puke? Do we really want to know?

The Code is more of what you call "guidelines" than actual rules.

That depends on whether you think our opinions are based upon our use of good judgment. :P

"Basically?" You were awarded a close but no cigar. That may fit the basically standard, but basically was, to my view, not good enough.

I added precision and clarity. You know me, WarLocke, always the Grammarian! :P And a bit of a windbag. :P

Hi,

This Post with it's 25+ replies, is not getting any better, the problem is too many LL members followed up with Crap making the Orignal post look Debatable.

I asked a very simple question that would have benifited ALL who Post at LL. I was Polite & Sincere.

I feel like the "Butt" (noun: A victim of ridicule or pranks) of a bad joke :(

I'm sorry you feel my post was crap. I was not attempting to make you the butt of some joke. It was a sincere response to try to clarify what it seemed you didn't understand.

In your original post you asked
Quote:The link offered was for a "FREE" Game...I as well as many others here at LL have posted Links to Free games...WHAT makes the deleted post any Different ?
Obi2Kenobi and I posted information on referral links because that is what it seemed you didn't understand. Posters were telling you that the rule of thumb you asked for was to not post referral links because they are generally of more benefit to the poster (they get some type of credit) than they are to the Lurker community. Perhaps there could be a line in the forum rules stating that referral links will not be tolerated. Beyond that, it does just come down to admin judgment. It would be very difficult to create a set of guidelines beyond that. Every time you try to include specifics, it becomes more difficult to enforce. Responses to a banning then come back as "You said I couldn't post XXXX1 but you didn't say anything about XXXX2". We have relied on forum moderators for a long time and it seems to be working.
