I'd put my vote with VLC as the player to use as well.

Another useful tool sometimes is a program called GSpot. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ It will look at a file you supply and tell you specifically what the encoding is. So if you do ever need to know what codecs a file needs you'll have a way to find that info out.
