old .avi files

I've come across some old .avi videos made years ago, (about 7 years ago). They are of course out dated and none of my programs recognize them anymore.

Anyone know of any programs that would?

I don't actually know, but a quick Google of .avi convert gave a nice selection of programs that might work for you. I suspect you'll need to download them and try till you find one that works.

A: Method 1: Go to 'Properties->Video' and activate the option: 'Use DirectShow for playing'.

A good codec pack is the K-Lite Codec Pack, it contains the most popular video/audio codecs.

It probably doesn't matter what media player you use, but it's a matter of having the right codecs installed. DirectShow might be a good place to start.

That's why I would recommend VLC, as it doesn't require any codecs to be installed. I've also never come across any video file it hasn't played.

That looks like a keeper. Thanks, I've bookmarked it for future use if I ever hit a media file that MS or QT can't handle.

If AVC can't play it, it can't be played. I've used it as my default media player for years now.

On top of the aforementioned VLC, I use media player classic with the combined community codec pack bundle:

I'd put my vote with VLC as the player to use as well.

Another useful tool sometimes is a program called GSpot. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ It will look at a file you supply and tell you specifically what the encoding is. So if you do ever need to know what codecs a file needs you'll have a way to find that info out.
