Dead Space is awesome

I just started playing this today, and it just might be the best game I've played in a long time. It's survival horror in a sci-fi setting, and it really is quite creepy. The story is that you play as a ship's engineer named Isaac Clarke (a nod to two giants in sci-fi) onboard a rescue vessel to help out an ailing mining ship. The mining ship has picked up... something, and you are about to find out what.

The graphics, sound, and control are all top-notch. It's an awesome looking game, and the interface is hidden seamlessly. Your health indicator is shown as a part of your suit, and ammo counts show on the weapons. It's a 3rd person perspective that takes some getting used to, but after a few minutes it really does work well. The sound might just be the best part. If you don't have a nice 5.1 surround system, do yourself a favour and use a set of headphones. Turn off the lights.

The green lights along the spine indicates health. Ammo count shows on the weapon, and the half-circle beside the spine is the remaining Stasis power.

System requirements aren't too bad considering just how nice this game looks.

Quote:Dead Space™ requires at least the following:

FOR WINDOWS XP (SP2) or Vista
* 2.8 GHz processor or equivalent
* 1 GB RAM (XP), 2 GB RAM (Vista)
* NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or better (7300, 7600 GS, and 8500 are below minimum system requirements)
* ATI X1600 Pro or better (X1300, X1300 Pro and HD2400 are below minimum system requirements)
* 256MB Video Card and Shader Model 3.0 required
* The latest version of DirectX 9.0c
* At least 7.5GB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for saved games.
* INTERNET CONNECTION, ONLINE AUTHENTICATION, AND END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY. MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.EA.COM.

Do yourself a favour and disable VSync, otherwise your mouse will seem incredibly sluggish.

Combat is kinda cool too. It's opposite to every other FPS in that the best way to dispatch enemies is to aim for the limbs as opposed to the head or torso. Your main weapon is a Plasma Cutter that you can toggle between horizontal and vertical to make precision cuts. You get some other abilities useful in combat such as Stasis (slows down enemies) and TK (pick up stuff and chuck them around).

I've been playing the PC version, but it's also available on XBox 360 and the PS3. The best way to describe Dead Space is "Resident Evil meets Silent Hill, in space!".

There's also a prequel animated movie that explains the events leading up to the game. I watched it last week and it's quite good.

My girl is a big fan of the horror/survival games, so I told her to put this on her Christmas list and maybe Santa or one of his representatives will deliver the goods
