Identity protection services

What is the likelihood that an identity protection service will itself be hacked thus compromising any and all information I provide to them?

I suppose anything online is hackable, but don't most sites that offer services like this, such as SSL, just give you access to a website that has downloaded the service to their server, thus the provider of identity protection would not be reachable? I'm hypothesizing here, and don't actually know how this works at all.
