It's my understanding you can just walk through the Chess room and head on to prince you don't have to play the game. It doesn't control any doors or gates as I understand it. The definition of what was optional is a bit arbitrary anyway and I'm not sure why I have Nightbane listed as optional since he used to be needed for attunements and for the reasons you stated Aran isn't optional either because of the trash he controls and being needed for the quest chain.

At this stage in our progression and with the attunement changes the designation of optional is completely meaningless anyway.

Look at the door from Chess to Prince next time you walk into Chess. It doesn't open until you beat Chess. You probably didn't notice this because Chess is super easy, but SHam probbably noticed it when he was stealthing around and couldn't get past that door.

Conc is right. If you don't do/beat the Chess event, the door at the far end of the hall will not open, making it so you can't continue on to Prince. Chess is not "optional", though the event is so easy it's more a 5 minute speedbump, if even that much, on the way to Prince.

The catch is of course the mats that you might have trouble with:
Chest takes 16 bolts of soulcloth and 2 primal nether
Cloak takes 12 bolts of soulcloth and 4 primal nether

(a soulcloth is 8 soul essences each, they only drop in Kara)

It being a PTR, there is hope that the mats will be reduced. Looks like it will be a while before it goes live too, which will give the soulcloth stores a chance to build back up.

I'll be happy to make these for anyone who wants one... I still have 3 nether in the bank I can't use besides these two patterns, the nether leg patches, and some enhancement shaman gloves. (And that's after I make my own chestpiece!)

The cloak seems squarely aimed at Fury warrior, doesn't seem well itemized for anything else. It is the best Fury cloak until BT I think.

I think we have quite a few soul essences in the bank at this point. I think Yuri has stopped making Soulcloth pieces by now.

Yeah, the only other might be a Enhancement shaman, but those aren't exactly common either. Still, if someone has an alt that's not raiding it would be a darn good piece.

I have 7 void crystals chilling without much use right now, but I have no cloak anywhere near as nice as that cloak (I'm sure Johny and Wimpy are in the same boat), and I'm sure you have no chestpiece near as nice as that one.
