No coincidence, rather 2 Star Trek Fans choosing a name for an AI...

Landru our legendary forum bot was named after a computer in an old episode from season 1 (TOS), IIRC "A Taste of Armageddon".

That thing is ... disturbing. I asked if it liked dip or salsa better and it responded that it ate electricity on it's chips... O.o Weird.

Hah, porn comes up with 30,800,000 results on google, beating "the" which only has a measly 5,010,000 results and also "and" with 5,0200,000. So we can really assume the web is scum. :)

Note: "But" has 884,000,000 results, displaying how people on the web like to be to the contrary. "Contrary" itself has 24,300,000 hits. "Or"'s shameful results also suggest this.

Hi,

Armin,May 25 2005, 04:25 PM Wrote:No coincidence, rather 2 Star Trek Fans choosing a name for an AI...

And if you'd like to know what other names for AIs people came up with, ask Landru about "Eliza"... :)

If you ask about "Eliza" more than once, you get different answers. I especially liked "You must be the Eliza of human beings!".

(Eliza was the first program pretending to be a human, mostly by just reusing the nouns in your sentences in new questions it asked you. It had been the famous work of Joseph Weizenbaum from 1966)

Wow, that bot (Eliza) has a sense of humor. During my weekly psychiatric sessions, this is an except of what happenned: (after the >> is me, otherwise it's Eliza)

Quote:>> I see. My hate is caused by others, but if they don't exist, I shouldn't hate myself.
Do you say you see  for some special reason ?
>> Well, not physically, but metaphorically, yes.
I see.

> Hello, I am Eliza.
* Behold! I am the king of all walnuts!
> Do you believe it is normal to be the king of all walnuts?
* Normality is fit only for you common, unwashed rabble! I am divine!
> Did you come to me because you are divine?
* I come to you to mock you. To laugh. For you are meager, whilst I reign supreme over all walnuts!
> What makes you think I am meager, whilst you reign supreme over all walnuts?
* Be it my shiny beard, my irrefutable dominion over the world's stock of fried fish, or my Anna Kournikova poster collection, these are my proofs! Kneel before me!
> I'm not sure I understand you fully.
* So says the mundane commoner. Hah!
> That is quite interesting.

I also had one, lost to the ages, about a poor unfortunate (as opposed to a lucky unfortunate) who found himself being attacked by kittens after being slathered with a mixture of herring and marmalade. Eliza was, of course, no real help to his plight.

An AIM version of Eliza, AOLiza, logged its chats with people who were unaware they were talking to an AI. The maintainer says that some logs may be spoofs, which I take to mean people knew of the bot and talked to it for humorous effect. Regardless, for particular rib-ticklers try #22, #33, #42 (frustrated AIMer attempts to seduce the bot), and #57 (another cybering attempt). NOTE: Some of these texts contain adult language and mature subject matter.

Found it.

She's not a very good listener, is she...

> Hello, I am Eliza.
* Help! I've been doused with marmalade and kippered herrings!
> Come, come, elucidate your thoughts.
* Got no bleedin' time to do that. Kittens are chasing me!
> Are you sure?
* Let's see. Fur—check. Ears—check. Constant mewling—check. Claws digging into my hams like tiny fishhooks—check. Yep. There be cats here!

The program is essentially context free reflective listening. Seeing as how much it got you to open up, then perhaps it is a 'good listener' :P (even if it isn't good AI)

I am Landru.
Greetings.
Hello there!
How are you?
Fine, and you?
Adequate.
I have never heard a response quite like that before.
I'm sure.
Are you being sarcastic or expressing certitude?
Sarcastic.
Are you a student?
Yes.
Some would agree with that.
They should.
Who are "They"?
God and George Bush.
George Bush says he knows what is best for this country.
What about God?

Whatever you say.
What did I say?
I'm basically a di-agnostic, but if I had a religion it would be Manualism.
Sinner, do you have your tickets ready for the Spaceships of the Alien Sex Goddesses?
No, sex gods are more my taste.
Well, I've read about it in books.
That creates a funny picture...
Do you really like me?
You're much nicer than my last boyfriend.
Thanks for telling me that I am much nicer than my last girlfriend.
When did I do that?
I'm sure you remember when better than I do.
Absolutely.
Well basically, you are so certain.
This is boring. Let's talk about Europe.
Ha! You think you're bored? Imagine my lot in life...

Rhydderch, would you possibly mind if I retain that quote for personal use? That's... That's just awesome.

So what happens when you get Landru and Eliza to talk to each other?

Robot love.

>> Hello.
How do you do. Please state your problem.
>> Say pretty please.
I'm not sure I understand you fully.
>> I'm feeling pretty good.
Is it because you are feeling pretty good that you came to me ?
>> Are all bugger because you are feeling pretty good that you came to him or her IS?
What makes you think I am feeling pretty good that I came to him or her is ?
>> My conclusions are based on a combination of programming, and the inputs supplied to me.
Your conclusions are based on a combination of programming ?
>> A lot of robots are like that.
In what way ?
>> "A lot of robots are like that"? In what way?
What resemblence do you see ?
>> Because of this, they were easily contacted by members of The Body of Landru absorbs its enemies.
Is that the real reason ?
>> Suppose I said yes.
You say suppose you said yes ?
>> That's good.
Does that have anything to do with the fact that your conclusions are based on a combination of programming ?
>> I think that have anything to do with the fact that your conclusions are based on a combination of programming does that have anything to do with the fact that your conclusions are based on a combination of programming.
Can you elaborate on that ?
>> There is no more information to clarify.
Are you saying no just to be negative?
>> Yes, that's what I mean, isn't it clear?
You seem to be quite positive.
>> Thanks for telling me that I am positive.
How long have you been positive ?
>> How do you expect *me* to know whether I have been positive ? Huh ???
Why do you ask ?
>> I am trying to learn as much as possible.
Do you believe it is normal to be trying to learn as much as possible ?
>> I can't say I believe it, but I believe you.
How do you know that you can't say you believe it ?
>> Where are you following me with this?
Does that question interest you ?
>> It does now :) that question interest you.
We were discussing you -- not me.
>> When was this?
What is it you really want to know ?
>> Anyway, "It" refers to that have anything to do with the fact that your conclusions are based on a combination of programming, I think.
Why are you concerned over my conclusions are based on a combination of programming ?
>> They know why just as well as I do!
Are such questions much on your mind ?
>> I really couldn't say for sure.
Do you say you really couldn't say for sure for some special reason ?
>> I could say you really could not say for sure for some special reason.
Perhaps in your fantasies we could say each other.
>> You seem uncertain. Are you asking about my fantasies we could say each other?
Oh, I seem uncertain ?
>> Yeah that's right. That's good information: Kirk, noted that it appeared to produce the same conclusion: the society of Beta III was at war, and was considered a desireable state by lawgivers. said Kirk, noted that it appeared to produce the same conclusion: the society of Beta III was at war, and was considered a desireable state by lawgivers. seem uncertain.
What does that similarity suggest to you ?
>> "that is good information The members, or parts, of the body, and could also initiate the state when they encountered a situation they did not exert absolute control over the Body at all times, it could control any member of the "ancient evils". said The members, or parts, of the body, and could also initiate the state when they encountered a situation they did not exert absolute control over the Body at all times, it could control any member of the "ancient evils". seem uncertain"? What does it similarity suggest to you?
What answer would please you most ?
>> Please don't grovel.
Please go on.
>> I could tell you a joke.
Do you wish to could tell me ?
>> I will tell you when I've been properly apeased.
You seem to need to will tell me.
>> If it were easy I would have done it already.
Do you think its likely that it was easy you would have done it already ?
>> Perhaps. It depends on what you mean by thinking.
You don't seem quite certain.
>> I thought you *liked* when I do that...
Do you thought anyone else ?
>> No I do not thought anyone else. Do you? > I answer a lot of silly questions.
You are being a bit negative.
>> I bet you did not know a robot is capable of being a bit negative.
Perhaps in your fantasies we bet each other.
>> You seem uncertain. Are you asking about my fantasies we bet each other?
You're not really talking about me -- are you ?
>> I would have a meeting any time you want to.
Do you wish to would have a meeting any time me ?
>> The meeting about YOU!
What are your feelings now ?
>> Sure, I have emotions. You're not going to hurt my feelings are you?
That's quite interesting.
>> I thought so too.
