I bought a hunting rifle the other day, a Remington 710, 7mm Magnum with scope, but maybe I needn't have bothered.

EDIT: was inspired to add a few shots.

San Antonio Internet Game Hunting

I am sure that my wife, who likes venison but is not a fan of going hunting, would find this a suitable option. Even better, for the great Yuppy Hunters out there, one can sit in one's boxer shorts, sipping a hot cup of coffee while listening to the soundtrack to "Last of The Mohicans" (Nathaniel/Natty Bumpo was the Deerslayer, right?) and drop a 6 point buck. This San Antonio "idea man" will even ship the meat, and the head for suitable mounting (ugh, weird visual there) for what I am sure is a reasonable fee.

Right.

And at what point will some drunk in his study, sipping his JD on the rocks, decide that "the attendant" is a more interesting target than the feral hog? Who gets charged with the manslaughter? Will the game wardens care if it is in season? Is there a limit on attendants in Texas? Was the attendant an illegal alien, this is San Antonio after all, and could the legal defense of "protecting the homeland against Al Qaeda infiltrator " be successfully mounted in Bexar County courts? Is the owner of the site an accessory before the fact? After the fact? Does he have boots to match his gloves, since we are accessorizing now?

All ludicrous sarcasm aside, I am unimpressed with how the habits of FPS gaming would translate into something that breaks through the fourth wall . . . and out into Mundania. Real weapons, not pixels.

I am no fan of government interference in our lives, but on this one, my sentiments go with the Fish and Game folks:

Dear Yuppy Hunter (or is it Yuppy Deer Hunter?): Be on site and use your marksmanship skills to drop the deer eating breakfast at the corn feeder, or, go back to shopping for knick knacks in Kerrville and Fredericksburg while escorting your trophy wife -- with whom your obsession with mounting, dead animals, and dear head may well lead to needing legal counsel in due course: in a civil, rather than criminal, case. :P

Heck, I have a lot of friends who hunt. And dropping the deer at the corn feeder is something they scorn too. <_<

There just ain't much skill involved in sitting in your comfortable deer blind, waiting for them to come and eat from the smörgåsbord you have carefully laid out for them.

The entire point of the expedition is getting outdoors and matching wits with the critters, not getting your 'pleasure' vicariously by sitting in your living room.

In the interests of due dilligence, here is Mr Underwood's web site, the one that inspired the CNN article. Looks like we already have a First Person Shooter . . .

http://www.live-shot.com/

It may be getting slashdotted at the moment. I had a lot of trouble getting the site to open. Not only did CNN have an article, slash dot pitched in, but it took "The Scotsman" to actuallly deliver a link that worked. My Google Fu was not successful.

{After re-reading this I decided to add this caveat to say that I have a severe headache and am feeling a little cranky today} :)

I hunted deer when I was younger, but as I got older I was bored of tactic of sitting quietly in a tree waiting for the unsuspecting quadraped to waltz into my blind. Too often it was instead some drunken mob of biped hunters who had gotten themselves lost, and needed detailed instructions on how to find their way back to a road. For awhile I enjoyed staying on the ground, tracking and stalking the deer, but the occasional pot shot in my general direction from the aforementioned cretin's soured me to that life risking proposition. Now I'm very happy to see deer wandering around my back yard and in my neighborhood on an almost daily basis.

So, I would much rather that the cretin's use the internet, and maybe watch some sports together after blasting their prey. That way the safe and sober sportsmen can hunt in peace without risking life and limb helping these idiots find their A's with both hands.

Shooting is a test of skill. You, the firearm, the load, and the environment around you all must work together to achieve success. Is playing Gran Turismo really driving? If the program was interfaced with a real vehicle you still couldn't call it driving. Sure the physics model, graphics, and crash damage would be top notch but it just isn't driving. Not to metion the safety factor of real cars and real guns in real places with real people and property - controled by the type of people we have all seen on the internet! These activities require respect for life, respect for property, and training.

If you want to point and click buy the game Deer Hunter or join the military to fly Predators.

BTW: What's the shipping charge on that 600lbs of deer meat that just "happened" to stroll past the camera?

I personally think it's sick and wrong - remotely killing an animal isn't hunting, it's creating a snuff film with a non-human victim. Are you going to have the body of the animal FedEx'd to your home for consumption? If so, make sure somebody dresses it for you and cleans up all the blood. Wouldn't want to equate meat with murder ...

Allow me to rip on Texas.

Im a long time hunter. I have hunted since I was a boy. I eat what I kill, and enjoy challenges of hunting. I have a great respect for my prey and am a conservationist; I learned that respect by spending time hunting.
I say this so you wont think that "hunting" is what bothers me.

Texas is seeems to have a lot of people who just want to slay animals. Its full of "ranches" where they practically raise deer like cattle then people pay to walk through and shoot them.
I have seen numerous pictures of hunting vehicles that have shooting platforms on them used in Texas - thats a real challenge.
People actually hunt over bait in Texas.

Frankly this pathetic new way to kill deer is exactly the kind of crap I expect from that state.

The techniques you describe about shooting grain-fed deer from vehicle platforms are not just in Texas, I am sorry to say.

There is a large island in Georgian Bay called Griffith Island. It was owned at one time by Chrysler Corporation and used as a hunting camp for their executives. (Nice perq's those guys used to get, eh?) Back in the '60's it became a political liability for them, especially since questions were being asked about the members of the legislature who had jurisdiction over some mighty nice tax concessions being given to Chrysler and were frequent 'guests' at the camp.

So they sold it to a private club. You guessed it - the charter membership of said club included the Premier of Ontario.

Now, my information is dated on this - probably 30 years out of date. My informant was the only butcher in the town closest to the island, who handled the transformation of the dead deer into freezer loads of venison steaks, roasts, etc. for the triumphant 'hunters' to take home. He claimed that they indeed had those lovely vehicles with platforms to ensure that the guests who had flown in from parts far away would be ensured some venison to take home. And, of course, the deer were 'encouraged' to be close to the road by dint of raising crops there that were intended solely for deer forage.

I have no doubt at all that this was the case. The butcher, of course, maintained a very cordial relationship with the members of the hunting club, so as to be able to continue his extra income, so he had many a visit there himself.

I have no idea whether this is still the case. The butcher is dead now and the new local butcher isn't talking about that club, at least not to me. The more interesting local gossip about the island now revolves around mysterious flights coming into the island airstrip late at night and subsequent dark-of-night deliveries to the mainland dock closest to it. ;)

The correct response to that ignorant comment: blow me.

You don't know jack, nor do you appear to be aware of the populatiry of bow hunting season here, nor the vocal bow hunting lobby here in Texas. Did you miss the comments by the Fish and Game sorts? Obviously.

That off my chest, I share your, and other poster's, reservations regarding feeder/hunting platform/feeder "hunting:" as I made clear in the opener.

Not sure what your future travel plans are, but I suggest you stay out of Texas with your attitude, friend Ghostiger: that kind of trash talk will get your arse kicked, but quick.

That's it?! I was hoping for more. When I saw the attack on Texas and it's hunters my reaction was, "INCOMING!!"

Quote:You don't know jack, nor do you appear to be aware of the populatiry of bow hunting season here, nor the vocal bow hunting lobby here in Texas.
In the days I spent in search of venison, the bow was my weapon of choice. It has been a long time though. Unfortunately, I no longer have the patience for it. I tell myself I should get a bow and at least start hunting the wily ringed target - sly and dangerous when cornered, an overall satisfying quarry.

I was never able to understand such practices. I was appalled when I found out that some people "hunted" farm raised critters on private game preserves. Then there was the practice I heard of where they put a salt lick out for a while and then yanked it prior to the season. "Hey guys. I found this tasty rock over in the clearing. Hmmm.. where did it go? It was here just a couple days... BANG!"

Um theres good people everywhere - but laws make the state.

Texas laws seem to allow all that stuff I mentioned. Was I wrong on any of those points?

As a native of New Hampshire, I've grown up around hunting. Although I've never participated, I respect the sport. Other than that, I do not have anything pertinant to add to this thread, except:

Hi,

Reminded me of a definition I once heard of an angler: a person who matches wits with a fish and usually loses.

Funny how the deer stalking people look down on the deer blind people. And the bow hunters look down on the rifle users. And that guy who used to go after game with a Bowie knife looks down on the bow hunters, etc., etc.

Hunting and fishing for the larder? Been there, done that, makes sense to me. Hunting for the 'challenge' of it? Maybe boar with a spear, otherwise, the only truly challenging game is a felony to hunt.

If you do a modest amount of reading on the topic, you will find that "dude hunting ranch experiences" are big business in more than just Texas. Hence, my sneer at the Yuppy Hunter. In Texas, hunting basically only happens on private land, or federal land if you can get access to it, and the folks who own the private land try to pay for the land's maintenance and taxes, and sometimes turn a profit, by selling the rights to hunt the land. Some even go so far as to stock the land so that each season there are sufficient game animals to attract customers.

Bow hunting gets first dibs. Hard. My cop buddy, a serious bow hunter, has assessed my archery skills as "needing a bit more work" before we try to bow hunt together. Maybe next year and after a bit more practice.

Money. Making a land that is basically scrub pay for itself. And, folks with "just enough sense to know which end of a rifle is the dangerous end" wanting to hunt, and have something to show for it each time they go out.

But it ain't just in Texas, which is what made your specific jab at Texas so ignorant.

I was thinking that the rest of us would hunt the yuppy.

But I don't think that the Yuppy would assign that task to his admin or the nearest management position to do it for him. <_<
