I'd love to try out multiplayer in Freelancer, but I don't think there's a master server for it -- it requires someoe to host the server, IIRC.

Or, probably, it can be played on GameSpy.

*Shudders*

Edit: Hey, wait a minute. I would have thought you should be able to play it on the Zone, but apparently not...

When beset by doubt,
Run in little circles,
Wave your arms and shout.

Good news!

When you click the "multiplayer" option on the main menu, you're taken to a master list of available servers.

I'm on "Sirus Horizon Ventures" right now...

EDIT: Playing solo in MP is no fun, so I'm on "24/7 Seattle Based" now.

I've played the game off and on for a bit, and while I get that it is about shopping, I still don't see the whole "Diablo in Space" that so many people have said. Maybe it is because I played Elite on the C-64 way back when, and that is really what it feels like to me. I just don't see the diablo part.

As for how it plays. It plays like an FPS and not a space combat sim. If you want a space combat sim get FreeSpace and FreeSpace2 (the first one is still fun too).

Of course I think this was mentioned in another thread as was mentioned, but I'm a little slow today. I just don't get the Diablo in Space reference.

Diablo in space as in all you do is go around killing guys and picking up their loot. you can upgrade weapons and shileds, even buy a whole new ship (aka armor) there is little to no story, and you can group with others and even trade via an in game trading screen.

thats how its diablo in space. :)

this game really needs an expansion pack of sorts to make it more rpgish.

Example of play:

I log oto a new server (Boomtown something or other), create a new character, and do a few missions. Then I get bored and ask if anyone wants to do some pirating.

So I end up in a 5-ship group, and we cruise over to Manhattan (the "center" of the New York system; plenty of cargo haulers passing through), where we start scanning the passing tugs for valuable loot. Eventually we spot one carrying Pharmacueticals (not the most valuable commodity, but up there), so we break formation and attack. After the tug goes up in flames (tugs don't have shielding for some reason), we all mash our tractor buttons to gather the scattered loot. Then we go on to the next tug (convoys usually have 2 or 3 carriers).

By this time the convoy's escorts (light Starfliers) as well as the Liberty Space Force ships in the area (a mix of Starfliers and Patriots), as well as Trenton Base and Newark Station, are all firing at us. We take some potshots, scatter, and head for the jump lane to West Point.

We hit several convoys in New York, and when just about everybody but the Outcasts and Junkers (the local pirate/bandit groups) were hostile to us, we jumped to the California system.

Pirating = GOLD.

I guess it's just because I have only played single player. I see the logic behind the comparison, but the game still doesn't feel the same to me.

Trying to remember where I am in single player. I know that all of Liberty hates me, I'm running around with an artifact, and I think the outcasts have been helping me out lately too. It's been a good a 8 hours of game time at least.

Maybe when I try multi it will feel more Diablo in Space, but probably not. :)

Hey, I'm at the same point in SP!

The whole "break out of Liberty" mission was just rad, especially the showdown between the two cruisers over the West Point trade lane...

I'm in Bretonia now, and if you haven't gotten that far yet, I advise you to buy a Crusader (Bretonian heavy fighter) immediately. The thing looks like an ugly starfish, but it's better than a Liberty Defender in every way, and can mount 2 Class 4 guns and 4 Class 5, along with a cruise disruptor/torpedo launcher, mines, and countermeasures. And the Rippers sold there are awesome...

Oh yeah, anyway, from Leeds take the lane to Stokes, and from Stokes you should be able to see a brownish planet to the "north". The Battlecruiser York is orbiting that planet, and sells the Crusader.

The Cavalier light fighter (sold at Leeds) looked impressive, too, but I'm a heavy fighter guy. :D

Nah, if your in bretonia, go to Rochester Base, Northeast of southampton shipyard, follow the patrol paths on your nav map to find it. There you can buyt he legionaiire, a ship that will serve you well until you can get the anubis!

Purchase a legionnaire over a Crusader? Are you crazy? You'll need all the firepower and armor you can get for some of the later Kussir and Reinland missions. I must admit the legionnaire looks nice and I was tempted to buy one but I traded in my Crusader (which replaced my dagger I had been flying in liberty space) for a Domedary as soon as I hit level 10. (Legionnaire is found at Trafalgar Base, Rochester is in the new york system).

Well, I traded my Crusader in for a Drake when I got to Kyushu. The Crusader's relatively large number of hardpoints is nice (and Advanced Rippers are awesome), but the thing does turn like a bus. The Drake has nearly the staying power of the Crusader, can mount 4 Class 6 guns (in place of the Crusader's Class 5 mounts), and handles like a dream; you only give up about 300 points of armor, 2 Class 4 mounts, and a torpedo launcher (the Drake can mount a Disruptor, but not torpedos).

Also, does anyone else feel that mines are worthless? I swear by the Advanced Countermeasure Dropper, but mines just seem like a waste of credits, since they never seem to connect. Even if I drop a Ripper (fastest high-end mine available to me), just before I pass a hostile (you would think the combined velocities ensured a hit), the mine just homes for a while, then poofs out. And they're indiscriminate--I've seen my mines hit a friendly that came too close...

I've been considering buying a freighter as well, since I need to make cred fast (the aforementioned mine wastage, as well as buying tons of batteries/nanobots and repairs after tangling with Rheinlad ships), but the Outcasts hate me again, and I don't even know where the Kusari freighter is sold (not on Kyushu). Although, even with reinforced hull and shields, and turrets, it seems like it would be extremely hard to survive some missions (like the Rheinland gunship/cruiser/battleship ambushes/fights) with a freighter.

And am I the only one thinking that the whole Sprague mission was totally rad? I have a totally new respect for Juni now, and the escape sequence was awesome! Freelancer may not be Prophecy-quality, but it's certainly picking up steam...

This game sounds interesting.

I read the PC gamer review and it mentioned PvP servers. Is this game designed for fon pvp or is tht just an add on that doesnt mesh with everything else in it?

The PvP switch simply determines whether players can damage each other or not. If it's disabled, you can shoot someone all day and not scratch their paint.

The "default" MP server is simply the SP galaxy, minus the storyline missions. So you can explore, haul freight, take bountyhunting missions, pirate, etc. to your heart's desire. Pirating tradelanes with a gang of ships is a ton of fun.

hey warlocke check out this site. its the Lurkerlounge except for Freespace... well almost. http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/

also I thought you might be intrested in the Freelancer Commodities v1.1 link on that page. its an excel file that outlines every trade route and whatnot in the whole game. its pretty nifty!

Also does anyone else wish you could have wingman after the single player? I also would love to have been able to buy space stations, big star cruisers or even planets. And a garage so that I could have more then just one ship. Man I really hope they make an expansion pack. the game is good but it could also be soo much better.

Bolty's review:

This game could have REALLY been something. As it is now, it's a heck of a lot of fun, but lacks the longevity factor. You'll play it for a few weeks at most and then shelve it. Not to say it isn't a lot of fun; it's great, but don't expect that "Diablo in Space" means "Diablo's Longevity as a Game."

Been playing it a little here and there for a few weeks, actually. If anyone wants to multiplay, find a good server that's up 24/7 and I'll join you Sunday, maybe? Not much spare time at the moment. :)

And yes, http://www.lancersreactor.com seems to be THE site of choice to follow the game. They have some great anti-spoiler rules in the forum that will allow you to get some info without ruining the single player game, but I recommend playing through single player before reading any web sites - as you know, learning things is half the fun!

Is multiplayer reasonable on a 56k?

My 56k has done fine in every game I have ever tried, but I looked on that furom and saw some comments on it not loading well.

"24/7 Seattle Based" is a nice large server (set at 45 players max) that I've been spending time on. It might be a nice server to get together on. It's fairly popular though, so it may be full when we want to get together...

I can run Freelancer on my 56k connection fine, although when the server/connection gets laggy I do experience "warping" ships. It's only noticable with serious lag, though.
